Short answer: for small damage, often not. If the repair costs less than your excess, or only a little more, a private repair usually makes more sense. It also avoids a claim on your insurance history.

Compare the repair price with your excess

Get a private quote first. Car-park scrapes, bumper scuffs, stone chips and door dings are often quick repairs. If the quote is below your excess, claiming won’t save you anything.

When claiming makes sense

  • The damage is well above your excess, such as a collision or hail damage.
  • Another driver was at fault and you have their details.
  • Structural parts, sensors or lights need replacing.

Get a price from photos

Send us a few clear photos of the damage through our quote form and we’ll give you an early idea of the private cost, so you can decide before you call your insurer.
